Introduction
William Penn baseball is nationally recognized as an incredibly successful program. Past Statesmen teams have captured national statistical titles in double plays, earned run
average, slugging percentage, triples, best pitching, fewest runs allowed season, and fewest runs allowed per game.
The Statesmen completed their first season in the Midwest Collegiate Conference in 2002 and have since rewritten the school's record book. Penn finished the 2004 campaign at 48-15
overall and 22-6 in the MCC, winning its first league title since 1992 and advancing to the program's first World Series. The 48 wins also set a new school record.
Penn claimed its third-consecutive MCC title in 2006, finishing 32-16 overall with an 18-7 league mark. The trio of successive championships ties a school record, as the
Statesmen also won three in a row from 1988-1990.
The Statesmen unfortunately were not able to collect their fourth-consecutive league crown in 2007, concluding the year at 25-23 (9-17 MCC). It was also the first time in five
seasons that the program did not qualify for the Region VII Tournament.
Two Penn juniors, outfielder Travon Jackson and pitcher Cody Himes, earned all-MCC honors, while Jackson was also named to the all-Region VII team.
Since joining the NAIA, William Penn has amassed amazing success as its 228-98 record attests.
Head Coach Mike Laird has coached 82 all-conference players and 20 All-Americans and nearly 30 former players have been drafted and/or played in the professional
ranks. More than 40 Statesmen players have earned academic all-conference since 2002. Over his 25-year collegiate coaching career, he owns a 722-318-3 record
while also being named conference coach-of-the-year eight times.
