Introduction
William Penn University softball has enjoyed 12 consecutive winning seasons, compiling 399 overall wins in that period.
Since joining the NAIA and the Midwest Classic Conference in 2002, Penn has added to its strong softball tradition, finishing
with three league titles, six Region VII Tournament appearances, and two regional crowns.
In 2005, for the fourth year in a row, the Lady Statesmen broke the school record for wins with a 51-22 mark, but more importantly, a
major goal was reached as Penn claimed the Region VII Tournament title and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in program history.
The 2007 campaign added to the tradition with another national tournament appearance, finishing the year at 46-14 (21-3 MCC), including
MCC regular-season and tournament titles as well as the Region VII Tournament crown.
Pitcher Meghan Oden paced Penn with an outstanding senior year, breaking the school record with 30 victories in addition to other accomplishments.
Oden led numerous individuals onto postseason teams, highlighted by herself being named to a pair of Second-Team All-American squads (NAIA and NFCA). Catcher
Ashley Brant joined her on the NAIA team, while shortstop Whitney Godwin was also a second-teamer by the NFCA.
Brant, Godwin, and Oden were joined by outfielder Ashley Larry on the all-Region VII team, while the foursome had two more additions, third baseman Jamie Heins and utility
Tyanna Helton, to the all-MCC team.
Five Lady Statesmen athletes also had success in the classroom as Kim Akers, Jesse Andrews, Brant, Larry, and Kim Whitlow were all named Daktronics-NAIA All-America
Scholar-Athletes this spring.
And, with the switch to the NAIA, the Lady Statesmen also play fall ball. Penn plays in several NCAA Division I fall
tournaments and also in some scrimmages in addition to its full spring schedule, which includes a spring trip.
